18 Things you didn’t know about Firefly

August 25, 2011

Firefly has quickly become a cult classic, after it was cancelled by Fox in 2002, after airing only 11 episodes (out of order). Firefly was created by Joss Whedon who is best known for creating Buffy the Vampire Slayer and is set to direct and write The Avengers movie set for release in the summer of 2012. Firefly is a space western set in the 25th century where the renegade crew of the Serenity try to stay one step ahead of the long arm of the Alliance.

  1. Irishgirl Says:

Neil Patrick Harris was offered and accepted the role of Dr Horrible, not Captain Hammer. Captain Hammer was portrayed by Nathan Fillion.

  2. Irishgirl Says:

Interesting….the three times I read it, it said Neil Patrick Harris, not Nathan Fillion. Oh well, as long as it’s correct now. Thanks.

  3. Treapy Says:

Learned a few new things. I’ll be on the lookout for Han Solo, from now on.

  4. Mark Says:

One of the best sci-fi series ever produced, acted in and directed. It’s been nearly 10 years now, boys and girls.

    Where is our revival?

  5. My2Cents Says:

I remember seeing Serenity in that episode of Battlestar Gallactica. That was a nice touch.

  6. Mekratrig Says:

The name of the character Nathan Fillion played was not “Hammer”, it was Mal Reynolds

  7. episiarch Says:

Neil Patrick Harris also had a supporting role in Starship Troopers, source of the Alliance armor.

  8. redjester Says:

“It’s just ‘Serenity’.” Hee! I kept thinking of Inara’s line from “Bushwhacked” each time I read “The Serenity”. Also, I actually learned a few new things that I hadn’t before! Very cool! Thanks!

  9. nonny Says:

I already knew 15 of those. And one of them is about Dr. Horrible, not Firefly.

  10. rjvjr971 Says:

How does writing this good get cancelled? This show was amazing.

  11. bbmcrae Says:

Neil Patrick Harris did not play Inara. That was a sexy woman.

    I’m just messin’ with ya.

  12. browncoat Says:

Firefly was great. Scifi for grownups! No aliens or cute little robots! I wish Starz network would pick this up with a new series, with the original cast, of course.

  13. CoburnHawk Says:

There is one slight adjustment to the data. The derelict ship set in “Bushwhacked” was used by Power Rangers, but it was NOT originally built for them. Those sets were built Originally for a failed Pilot called “StarRunners.”

I was on the crew that built those sets and was delighted to see them in Firefly. We built those damn things over 20 years ago and they can be see in countless Sy-Fy channel shows. The set is located in Sun Valley and is kind of the “go to” generic spaceship set.

I recognized it while watching the show because of our “Porthole covers” which were the tops of recycle bins, and the infamous “Frigidaire control panel” which was the inside of a frig door turned sideways, painted grey, with circuit boards glued over the egg holders.

  14. Zeeb Says:

“Firefly was a … space western.” Uh… Nope, sorry. Already knew that one, dudes.
